postcards from the road

We woke up early Thursday morning and hit Trail Ridge Road through the Rocky Mountain National Park. I don't know if I've ever been on a more beautiful road. The highest elevation on the road is something like 12,000 feet but the Honda (I've named it Jack) climbed the hills like a champion! The mountains were hard to capture on film, you just can't get the sense of vastness.... anyway, here's what it looked like, sort of! (Patrick took these photos.)

The clouds hang low in the air (low being like 10,000 feet) and storms can blow in on a dime.

If you're in Colorado, never go anywhere without a good hat for shade and a camera!

This little bastard wouldn't have lived long if Zeke had been with us! We found him chilling out at a roadstop near the top of one of the mountains.

It's amazing the part elevation plays in temperature. I think I read somewhere that you lose 10 degrees with every 1000 feet you climb. Anyway it was COLD up here but so pretty. The rocks behind the snow are lava! Remnants of a violent volcanic eruption...

Is it a worm or is it me??

So now I'm in a hotel in Colorado because it's Sunday and Deadwood's on. Tomorrow we're hitting up Black Canyon of the Gunnison and then on to Moab, Utah and Arches National Park! More photos to follow, so check back, eh?
