The sun slanted lazily in the crisp blue sky, subsiding into its autumnal slope lower and lower as the earth angles towards winter. It was freezing outside the night before, already the frost playing with my breath, leaving its mark on blades of grass and car windows. All things covered brightly with frozen dew, rounding corners and making the night appear soft, unfocused. The heat escaped from his car in waves and I leaned in to keep my hands warm, to keep from giving in to the cold.
We stood like that for over an hour, frozen in time, most of the conversation taking place between the spoken words in pauses and sighs. Held glances. And I laughed at myself for completing his sentence and he told me that he couldn't think right when I was around. And I laughed.
The winter will be long, spring even more so. I thought of JD and how I need to practice just offering it up more unconditionally. Driving home I realized that we will never have that moment back, not in the same way. A momentary sadness filled the empty spaces inside the car. My brain conjured up an image of Ranger, and of Arizona. My heart opened up and filled itself with the convulsive beauty of impermanence, I connected with that forgotten happiness. A perfect night because it was ephemeral, fleeting. Hang on tightly while you have it, and let go lightly when its gone.
I am so incredibly lucky.
